Created by the Einzbern family for use as the Grail Vessel of the Fourth Holy Grail War, Irisviel was born as a tool to be used and then thrown away. Despite this, however, she managed to gain a sense of self and human emotions over time and eventually became a cheerful and hopeful girl with an almost naively positive outlook on the world around her.
Though she was raised for most of her eight year long wife in the secluded reaches of the Einzbern family castle in Germany, Irisviel found a simple happiness living with her husband Kiritsugu, and their daughter, Illyasviel. In truth, it takes little to keep Irisviel happy, as long as she could be of use to her family and amongst those she cared about, she is able to put forth a hopeful face and look on the bright side of things. She also counts Saber among those most important to her for being the person with whom she was finally able to experience the outside world, It is also rare for Irisviel to look down on other and takes a person having committed truly heinous acts, such as Kotomine Kirei who attacked her directly, for her to see them as anything but good.
Also due to her secluded upbringing, Irisviel knows little of the world outside the Einzbern Castle walls and tends to find wonder and novelty in everyday items and events. This can be seen in how happy she was to simply get out and explore the city of Fuyuki with Saber and how excited she became to be able to do things like drive a car. This also often means that she has little knowledge of how to work modern technology, at least as modern as her lifetime, which sits roughly at around 1996-97. This is seen primarily scenes such as when Velvet Waver offered her a cellphone to call Kiritsugu, to which Irisviel responded that she had no idea how to work the machine and had to have Waver make the call for her.
Irisviel is fiercely loyal to her family and will do anything for them. She has placed all of her faith in Kiritsugu's plan to use the Grail War as a means to end all conflict and suffering in the world and does everything in her power to make it a reality, even seeing her own life as being of little importance if it meant that she would be able to assure her husband's victory. To this end, she takes such dangerous actions as Saber's false master in order to throw off the other contestants in the war and personally attacking Kotomine Kirei upon his intrusion of the Einzbern Castle's grounds. Because she sees her own life as being worth less then Kiritsugu's dreams and all the lives that would be made better by it's coming to pass, Irisviel tends to keep any of her own pain and suffering to herself. This is evident in a scene in which Irisviel has turned off her own sense of touch in order to conserve the magical energy that keeps her alive. She does this without telling Saber on the grounds that she assumed it would only worry the King of Knights if she knew.
In all, Irisviel is a cheerful and often naive girl who places her family and other people beloved to her above her own well being at times for the sake of the greater good. Pure to the point of it almost being silly, Irisviel almost always sees the good in any situation no matter how bleak and does not fear even her own death if some good would come of it for others.
